Earth Day

In a recent act to do more unselfish acts on a daily basis, we decided that we would make some environmental changes in our lives, as well. I was reading a newspaper article and in honor of earth day, suggested to the Mr. that we choose a couple of items off our list that we could add to make our lives more eco-friendly and he (surprisingly) agreed. I completed a quiz to see how “un-green” the Jones' are and as it turns out, this former litter bug, is practically a tree hugger.

Here’s what under our green belt...unbeknownst to us:

Recycle- Our great city so kindly recycles everything we discard, bless their hearts.
Using public transportation- I would have died from a heart attack and probably injured an innocent pedestrian had I brought my beloved stick shift to Manhattan, but being that both of us are believers in older and smaller cars, we scored some bonus points here.
Cloth napkins- I’ve used these since college for aesthetic reasons and buy many of them from vintage shops. I wish I could claim that my reasons were environmental.
Controlled heating and air- gotta pay the bilz.
1.6 gallon flush toilets- Thanks again, NYC!
Do laundry once a week- Not having a washer and dryer is not a luxury.
Eating vegetarian once a week- The energy it takes to produce a pound of meat greatly exceeds the energy demands of growing vegetables. Exclude Nate from this one, and although I love my meat, I definitely eat veg. once a week and shop locally for it.

So our new contributions will be to wash in cold water and to change all (we only have a few) of our light bulbs to LED bulbs. I also brought my own ceramic mug to work today since the office has cardboard. Word to your mother…earth, that is.
