So maybe my French is a little rusty, but that's my take on Kentucky Derby in French. The Mrs. and I recently had a little shindig for the big event. Several of my coworkers, Anne's coworkers, and other folks we are friendly with came over to our apartment for drinks, food, the big race. It was a solid turnout, roughly 20 or so people, most of whom and had never watched the Derby (if a horse race at all). Anne whipped up some delicious Southern foods like pigs feet, tripe, and a delightfully delicate braised opossum. Do I need to say I'm kidding here? I'm not sure. Actually she made some homemade potato salad, a chocolate pecan pie with bourbon whipped cream, some bourbon balls, jalapeno cheese grits, and some roasted pecans, all of which was quite delicious. I contributed some sliced beef and the mint juleps. The mint juleps were, as expected, bourbony (to invent an adjective), but they went down like coca-cola. Of course there was plenty of wine and beer to be had as well.
Aside from food and drink, we set up a rather fun betting pool. Basically we auctioned off horses in each finishing position (69, missionary etc.), OK, OK, stop, I'm here all week. So, the person who purchased the horse to win, won all of the money bet on the horses for the win column, and so on for place and show. The auction turned out to be a great time I never knew my inner passion for auctioning things (Alert: Springfield reference coming), by the way my new dream date is Billy Long. On a side note, Anne is now scheduled for rotator cuff surgery from her arm flying up during the bidding. So all of these festivies resulted in a pretty exciting race. The winner for each position took in well over $100, so some decent money was had, alas none of it by Anne or I. Also, the Eight Belles tragedy didn't slow us a bit, although it did lend a moment slightly less joyous than the rest of the party. We decided it was pretty awesome that an unknown like that really went above and beyond (literally) in her last race. All in all, the event was a great time. We got to lend a little southern Missouri hospitality to NYC, and had a great time doing it. We will definitely be doing it again next year.
