Happy New Year!

New Years Eve, another one of my favorite times of the year…always filled with so much hope and excitement, yet somehow, each and every New Years Eve is always just a little bit disappointing. It’s really no ones fault but our own, actually, my own. The holiday gets so built up-what party go to? What dress to wear? Who will we spend it with? Who do you kiss? Everything has to be just right-the pressures almost too much and it never seems to live up to the hype that I build it up to be.
Don’t get me wrong. Nate and I never have a bad time at a party, but it seems that so many NYE’s just wind up being a glorified Saturday night with a sequined dress and noisemakers. We’ve had the years that we’ve procrastinated to plan anything, and by default, ended up at the same bar that we spent every other Saturday night (Highlife), with the same people, only looking spiffier and waiting longer for drinks. We had the years when we did the prix-fix NYE dinners with other couples, complete with party favors and a champagne toast. For one of those parties, I had even designed and sewed my own dress to wear for the occasion. The 2007 year was brought in a la Francis in Paris at party with champagne flowing and new friends being made. Tres bon.
This year was our first in New York and Nate had to work until 8pm that evening and at 8am the next morning, so it looked like our typically our raging NYE party was pretty bleak. We didn’t really set plans because of this and thought we might just stop by friends or have dinner and a drink somewhere. I didn’t buy a dress, didn’t get a blow-out or have my nails done, but I also didn’t throw myself a pity party, like I might typically do if I would have missed a NYE celebration. I just didn’t feel the hype for some reason, even though we were in NYC of all places.
On NYE, the beginning of the night was spent at a neighbor’s dress-to-impress party with close friends and happened to be a great impromptu way to start the evening. Shortly after, our friends Itamar and Sam met at our place for a drink and so graciously brought over a very nice bottle of bubbly for the occasion. One bottle turned into two and we parted ways (in a very classy manner on the subway, I might add) while they went to a club downtown to ring in 2009. Nate and I decided to head over to a party at a friend’s from NYU that turned out to be a really great time. Needless to say, Nate didn’t get much sleep and the next day was a little rocky. I woke up and promptly hiked it to the nearest open drug store for Gatorade and aspirin, and spent about 6 straight hours on my neighbor’s sofa eating junk food and watching football, but despite the fact that I spent my first day of 2008 with a wicked headache and feeling lousy overall, it was the best night going out of the previous year to date and we didn’t even have to try.
Happy New Year Everyone!
